    Annually, one high school junior or senior will be provided a scholarship.  The award is subject to increase based on anticipated rising costs of an education.  The renewable merit and needs based scholarship can be used to attend the college of choice within New York City, and tri-state area.  The scholarship covers tuition over a  four-year period, paying for the college education at an accredited college or university and is not limited to any specific field or career objective and may be used to pursue any academic discipline.

    Potential awardees are selected in the fall or spring prior to entering college.  A minimum of 3 students will be interviewed and one student will be designated recipient.  Students should apply in the spring, and are required to provide along with their application, a recommendation or recommendations from a high school guidance counselor or administrator. Applicants are subject to be interviewed by this organization’s President and or its Board of Directors.

    Applicants parent or legal guardian will also be interviewed.

    In the spring of the year the student will matriculate, the recipient is given written and verbal notification of his/her award.

    Scholars will receive their funds for tuition per semester. The recipient must use the renewable scholarship until the full amount of $6,000.00 to $8,000.00 is used.  Funds are to be used to pay tuition to attend an accredited four-year college or university, CUNY, (City University of New York matriculated) or similar such university within New York City, the tri-state area. And recipients must be New York residents or a U.S. permanent resident.  Freda L. Thomas Scholarships are not limited to any specific field or career objective and may be used to pursue any academic discipline.

    Applicants and recipients are persons of high integrity.

    Students receiving the award are expected to provide a full accounting of their financial aid prior to each academic semester.

    If an awardee at any time is determined to have handled his scholarship or academic affairs in an unscrupulous manner, the award will be terminated. Scholars will be provided written and verbal notice upon termination.


    The President and Board of Directors have the authority to terminate the scholarship at any time if for any reason it is perceived that the scholar is mismanaging his/her academic standing or financial aid.
